Scarlet Witch"s Death Robs The MCU Of An Essential Marvel Mutant Story*
Because of Scarlet Witch’s apparent death in
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU has been robbed of an essential mutant storyline. Played by Elizabeth Olsen, the classic Marvel Comics Avenger seemingly met her end in Doctor Strange 2’s ending. But at the time of the film, it was hard to imagine that the MCU had actually closed the door on Wanda’s story.
Scarlet Witch’s survival felt likely, particularly when considering how many times Marvel Comics has brought her back from similar situations. But based on recent comments from Elizabeth Olsen, it’s worth wondering if Marvel really has killed her off. According to the actress, there aren’t any plans for her to reprise the role in any future movies or shows. That doesn’t rule out the possibility of a return, but it does imply that Scarlet Witch’s “death” in Doctor Strange 2 wasn’t a step toward her next arc in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars after all. If she’s dead, this would take a major character off the table for the group’s next two team-ups, while also depriving the MCU of a massive X-Men story.
Mutants Are Finally Appearing In The MCU

Scarlet Witch isn’t a mutant in the MCU, but the chances of her getting retconned into one skyrocketed when Marvel began inserting mutants into its world. Kamala Khan, who isn’t a mutant in the comic books, was revealed to be one of them in Disney+’s Ms. Marvel show. She-Hulk: Attorney At Law hinted at the existence of Wolverine somewhere in the Earth-616 reality, while simultaneously introducing El Aguila and Mr. Immortal, who are both mutants in the comics and may very well share the same origins in the MCU. Marvel then went further by confirming Namor the Sub-Mariner’s mutant status in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
With mutants propping up in the MCU in multiple Phase 4 projects, it’s clear that this concept isn’t one that Marvel has to invent in a movie; they’re already around. With that in mind, it’s not impossible that other characters in the MCU are secretly mutants as well. That could apply to Wanda since WandaVision established that the Mind Stone awakened latent abilities she already had. It may be that she and Quicksilver were really mutants all along.

In the source material, Scarlet Witch’s X-Gene was the foundation for its “House of M” event. “House of M” is remembered as the story where Wanda spoke her most infamous line, “no more mutants.” After using her reality-warping abilities to reshape the world into what she wanted it to be, the heroes of the Marvel Universe gradually woke up to what was really going on and managed to stop her. When her scheme was undone, Scarlet Witch rewrote reality again, this time stripping nearly every mutant of their X-Gene, and in turn, their powers.
