DC Universe"s Surprisingly Important Character Isn"t Who You"d Expect*
One surprising DCEU character seems to be key to the birth of James Gunn and Peter Safran's new
DC Universe. As the DCEU ends and the new DC Universe begins, questions about canon and continuity are expected to abound. With Henry Cavill's Superman officially out but Jason Momoa's Aquaman and Ezra Miller's Flash not yet confirmed to retire, it's difficult to identify which parts of the DC Extended Universe will be preserved, if any at all. Things get even more confusing with a show like Waller, where Viola Davis reprises her The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker role, being part of the new franchise.
After the confirmation of the DC Universe's new slate, which revealed the DCU's first chapter, "Gods and Monsters," certain projects have begun to disclose important information about James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe. For instance, Creature Commandos' nine main characters have been confirmed to include Rick Flag Sr. and Weasel. Apart from the anthropomorphic animal, the animated show also brings back a familiar voice, who could end up becoming the DC Universe's connective tissue in the future.
Steve Agee's John Economos Is Confirmed For Creature Commandos

The Creature Commandos voice cast includes Steve Agee, who reprises his The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker role as John Economos, member of ARGUS and liaison between Amanda Waller and the world's metahumans. Steve Agee had previously performed the motion capture for King Shark in The Suicide Squad as well, and the ravager Gef in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Clearly, Steve Agee is a strong asset in James Gunn's projects, so his return in the new DC Universe is logical. What's more remarkable is that Agee is playing the same character, setting the precedent that DCEU actors can transfer their characters directly to the DC Universe.
John Economos And ARGUS Are Tying DC Projects Together

Steve Agee's John Economos and Jennifer Holland's Emilia Harcourt also appeared in Shazam: Fury of the Gods' post-credits scene, where they attempted to recruit Billy Batson for the Justice Society. Shazam: Fury of the Gods' commercial failure puts into doubt whether this setup will continue in the new DC Universe, but John Economos and Emilia Harcourt's return suggests they can continue to show up in future DC movies and shows. As metahuman recruiters, they're the answer to the MCU's Nick Fury and Wong, who connect seemingly separate titles by keeping an eye on superheroes and supervillains.
As it stands, John Economos and Emilia Harcourt are linking James Gunn's DCEU entries with a major DCEU hero (Shazam) with at least one DC Universe show now. Given that Creature Commandos is an animated show and its source material was originally set in World War II, Steve Agee's appearance as John Economos potentially links all of the above with both a new format and a new setting as well. And considering how DCU animated characters are confirmed to be able to make the jump to live-action, John Economos is more than likely to keep coming back in future DC Universe projects.
