Why Taika Waititi"s Star Wars Movie Script Still Isn"t Done (Even After 3 Years)*
Taika Waititi has explained why his
Star Wars script still isn't finished - even though he's been writing it for three years. Waititi’s Star Wars project was first announced on Star Wars Day in 2020, but so far, there have been very few updates about its development. Since the announcement, Waititi has been busy with plenty of other projects, including Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder, the hit series Reservation Dogs, and the upcoming Next Goal Wins, but he maintains that his Star Wars movie is still moving forward, despite the delay.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Waititi explained in his own words why his Star Wars script is taking so long to come together. Naturally, the comment is filled with his trademark humor.
“I’ve got a really good idea for it. It’s just as with all films, it’s this middle part. You’re like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ And then you look at all of those films that are so great, you’re like, ‘Well, I guess they can’t meet some smuggler with an alien sidekick.’”
It's exciting to hear Waititi is still excited about his Star Wars movie, and that he's committed to giving the franchise the best possible effort. His comment also indicates he doesn't just want to rehash past formulas, which seems pleasing given the Star Wars sequel trilogy was heavily criticized for overdependence on nostalgia.

Three other Star Wars movies were announced at the time, all of which seem to be further along in the development process idea-wise, which does make it feel as though Waititi’s film is being pushed to the sidelines.
