Star Wars saga. Emperor Palpatine is undeniably the greatest villain of the entire Star Wars saga. Many of the franchise's most notable antagonists are entirely relatable; George Lucas himself devoted an entire trilogy to helping viewers empathize with Anakin Skywalker and show just why the Chosen One became Darth Vader. But Palpatine is different, the dark side personified, a force of nature who cackles gleefully at the havoc he wreaks.
Palpatine is absolute evil, and that is what makes him so very compelling. It helps that Ian McDiarmid understands this, bringing the Emperor to life in such a visceral and memorable manner. When Lucasfilm first revealed Palpatine was returning for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, they simply ended the first trailer with the sound of the Emperor's laughter; that was enough for viewers to immediately realize what was going on. Palpatine's return wasn't handled in an entirely satisfactory manner, of course; it's fallen to tie-ins to explain the finer details, with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hand-waiving it away with the phrase "Somehow, Palpatine returned." But the resurrection brought with it certain themes that fit perfectly with the saga, helping bind it together - some of the most sinister themes imaginable.
