Lucasfilm Has The Ability To Finally Realize George Lucas" Ambitious, Canceled Star Wars Show*

Long before George Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney, he actually considered making a live-action Star Wars TV show of his own. Star Wars: Underworld served as the working title for Lucas’ ambitious project. While very few details about the plot were ever announced, preproduction on the show went a lot further than most people realize. Set between Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, Underworld was meant to act as a bridge between the two trilogies. But due to budget constraints, Star Wars: Underworld was ultimately put on hold in 2010, and then officially canceled in 2012.
Star Wars: Underworld would have primarily taken place in the lower levels of Coruscant, and it would have followed mostly new characters in the Star Wars universe. According to Lucas, around 50 hours (2 seasons) of his planned 100 hour show were scripted. In several ways, the series sounded similar to Disney’s vision of the Star Wars galaxy in Andor. By focusing on new characters attempting to make their way in the underbelly of Coruscant, Underworld was meant to contain more drama than it did action.
Underworld Can Tell Multiple Stories During The Dark Times Despite focusing on new Star Wars characters, Lucas also hinted Underworld would cameo notable characters, as well. In fact, several Star Wars actors expressed interest in reprising their characters’ roles in Underworld. Both Jeremy Bulloch and Daniel Logan were interested in portraying Boba Fett in Underworld, and Logan had already begun to physically train for the role with help from Ray Park (Darth Maul). Had Underworld followed Fett, it would have tied-in with Star Wars: 1313, a video game that was canceled around the same time.
In addition to Boba Fett, Peter Mayhew also expressed interest on returning as Chewbacca, and Ian McDiarmid wished to reprise his role as Emperor Palpatine, who was supposedly portrayed in a sympathetic light in the series. But perhaps the most interesting story Underworld could have told was of Darth Vader’s secret apprentice, Galen Marek, from the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed video games. Sam Witwer—who did mo-cap for Marek in the games—voiced his desire for bringing Galen Marek to live-action through Star Wars: Underworld. With so many actors interested in the series, Star Wars: Underworld had a plethora of stories it could have explored.
