Lanterns: Everything We Know About The New Green Lanterns Series*

With James Gunn having announced that a Green Lantern project is in the works at DC Studios, titled Lanterns, there have only been a few details released about it that everyone will want to know. As evident from the title, this planned DC original would delve into the lives and powers of multiple wearers of the Green Lantern ring. Announced as a part of the new roster of the DC"s cinematic universe, Lanterns will be a fresh, new take on the titular comics.
When it comes to DC"s animated projects, the Green Lantern John Stewart has proven to be a significant hero in the DC Animated Universe with Justice League and its sequel series, Justice League: Unlimited. This gave way to a short-lived Green Lantern animated series, which put the spotlight on more Lanterns, such as Kilowog and Guy Garner. On the live-action front, the Green Lantern Corps had a tragic fate, with Ryan Reynolds" 2011"s Green Lantern being one of the worst superhero movies ever made. However, with James Gunn attempting to revamp DC"s films and shows as its new creative head, Lanterns might serve as a breath of fresh air.
Lanterns Latest News Lanterns has found their Hal Jordan, as Kyle Chandler was officially confirmed as Hal Jordan following the rumor that he was going to play the character. The Lanterns casting move has seen some divided response, but is one that could pay off as Kyle Chandler is an incredible actor that has a lot of experience on television. His role of Coach Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights earned him an Emmy win, and if he can channel that mentor energy into Hal Jordan, it could be something special.
Lanterns have also officially found the DCU its third Green Lantern. Alongside Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre has been cast as John Stewart, confirming the idea that John would be the younger Lantern and would be mentored by the experienced Hal Jordan. Aaron Pierre recently made waves in the film Rebel Ridge, which showed his potential to play a character like John Stewart. With Hal Jordan being the vet, Aaron Pierre will presumably be the main Green Lantern as the DCU continues to build in the years to come.
Lanterns Confirmed After canceling several DC Extended Universe projects, co-CEOs of DC Studios Peter Safran and James Gunn"s plans are attempting to fix previous franchise problems while starting DC"s cinematic ventures on a new note. Finally, some clarity was offered on January 31, 2023, when Gunn announced 10 new movies and shows, which included Lanterns. Since then, Lanterns has had some exciting developments, including hiring Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and Chris Mundy (Ozark) as writers alongside comic book writer, Tom King.

When Could DC's Lanterns Release? There is no official release date announced for Lanterns, but it is reported that DC Studios is currently looking to begin filming in January 2025 and finish in July 2025. With an extensive amount of VFX work that will presumably need to be done, Lanterns seems like it is prime for a release sometime in 2026. Once production is officially underway, a better idea of when Lanterns will release should quickly follow.
The DCU is still being fleshed out in terms of release schedule, with Creature Commandos and Superman, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow being the only projects with actual release dates. If Lanterns makes the 2026 release window, it will join Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and The Batman Part II, priming DC to have a strong slate following Superman in 2025.
Lanterns Cast Kyle Chandler As Hal Jordan Kyle Chandler was a surprising choice for Hal Stewart, but has proven that he can play that mentor role extremely well, especially with his Emmy winning performance as Coach Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights. Hal Jordan is typically the main Green Lantern in DC, but hasn"t been in live-action since his first disappointing movie outing. Chandler is a seasoned actor, with roles in projects like Bloodline, Friday Night Lights, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Manchester by the Sea, and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Aaron Pierre As John Stewart Aaron Pierre will take on the role of John Stewart, who is another human member of the Green Lantern Corp. Stewart was the fourth human to be a Green Lantern after Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, and Guy Gardner. Aaroan Pierre has seen great success lately, leading Netflix"s Rebel Ridge, which earned him critical acclaim. He has also played a major role in Krypton, another DC series. Pierre will be the voice of the iconic Mufasa in the upcoming film Mufasa: The Lion King. This will be the first time that John Stewart has officially appeared in a live-action project.
Lanterns Is Different From The Planned HBO Max Show Before Gunn"s announcement, Greg Berlanti, who had helped conceive many shows for the CW"s Arrowverse franchise, had expressed his interest in developing a series focusing on the Green Lantern Corps. Even though this Green Lantern show"s place was uncertain within the previous DCEU, it was first announced in 2019 with even the casting department getting to work. In 2021, Ratched and American Horror Story alumnus Finn Wittrock was slated to join the potential HBO Max original as Guy Gardner, while War Horse"s Jeremy Irvine was to play fellow Green Lantern Alan Scott.
Berlanti"s vision was radically different from Gunn"s subsequent plan as no details around John Stewart and Hal Jordan were in the pipeline back then. In fact, the HBO Max original was set to also feature other Green Lanterns, such as Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. Even though Zack Snyder"s Justice League was to feature Wayne T Carr as John Stewart, the scene was eventually cut and replaced with a Martian Manhunter cameo. Still, it was unclear if Wayne T Carr"s Stewart would appear in the Greg Berlanti series. However, with Gunn redesigning the DC Studios road map, the previous Green Lantern series remains canceled, in favor of the upcoming HBO series, Lanterns.
Lanterns Story Details Going by what James Gunn has revealed, the premise of DCU"s new Green Lantern show would go along the lines of a True Detective-style crime thriller with the two Green Lanterns investigating a mystery that would connect the show with the larger story that Gunn"s proposed Gods and Monsters arc would explore. As Gunn referred to it as "a terrestrial-based mystery", most of the action is to take place on Earth. In this sense, the duo would serve more as "space cops" instead of being superheroes, which is a common view of what the Green Lantern Corps actually is.
The True Detective style goes on to prove how the new DC slate reveal is willing to be open to diverse creative inspirations rather than just sticking to overdone superhero formulae. As Gunn is not too eager to reinterpret the origins of his characters, Lanterns would feature its titular characters as already-established heroes. The mystery that they will be solving is of an ancient scale that could have significant consequences for the two Green Lanterns as well as the overall story of the rebooted DC universe. It is also possible that the first season"s Earth-based story gives way to more interstellar arcs in future seasons, much like the comics.
